Laura Feijòo, who has decades of experience as an educator with the New York City Department of Health, has been named as the permanent New Rochelle Schools Superintendent. She will officially take over on Nov. 1.
An extensive search for a permanent superintendent was launched after former Superintendent Brian Osborne announced he was stepping down nine months early. Magda Parvey was named as the interim superintendent after acting as an assistant superintendent and chief academic officer for three years.
Last month, Board President Jeffrey Hastie announced that they had come up with a candidate to take over, but failed to reach an agreement on a contract, prompting them to re-open the search, which led them to Feijòo.
As the senior superintendent of the New York City Department of Education, Feijòo was directly responsible for supporting the Chancellor’s vision for schools across all divisions in policy and labor management. Feijóo was also selected by her peers to serve as President of the New York State Council of School Superintendents during the 2017-2018 school year.
“I’m honored that the Board of Education has selected me to serve as Superintendent of a school district with such a long history of excellence,” Feijóo said. “I plan to work tirelessly together with the Board, administrators and staff to ensure that each and every student has the opportunities and supports needed to be successful, not only as students, but as future citizens.”
In a statement, Hastie said, “Dr. Feijóo’s focus on data-driven instruction, accountability, and high standards comes at a critical time to ensure our district moves forward in the right strategic direction. She is well prepared to tackle the challenges of this role and provide strong, stable leadership for our district well into the future.”
“We, as a board, are extremely grateful to Dr. Parvey for her service to the district and willingness to continue at the helm to support a smooth transition for Dr. Feijóo,”
